The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the nature and severity of domestic violence. The United Nations (2020) estimates that calls for domestic violence supports have increased by 10-50% around the globe since the beginning of the pandemic. A similar report also found that for every three months the world remains in lockdown, an additional 15 million instances of gender-based violence will occur (United Nations, 2020). Reasons for this increase include the following: stay-at home orders increase the time spent at home with an abusive partner, significant social isolation, higher rates of substance abuse and mental health concerns, unemployment, and a lack of access to support services.
